Recalling my memories is what fuels my need to make pictures - it's to do with sharing past experiences with the viewer, childhood memories of sitting at the table in my Nan's kitchen the abandoned disorder she created in the wake of her culinary tasks. The pots, bowls, spoons and sieves the tools, all cleared away when the job was done to be replaced with a freshly laundered table cloth and clean bowls and plates. Time spent on the South coast reinforces this experience for me as the ritual of making a cup of tea and cooking lunch becomes similar to that of my nans .The interior in my beach hut and the things that find their own way there have a story to tell, a mixture of inherited objects from past owners and my own seem to tell their own story. The memories of colour, pattern and the chosen objects then start to form from sketchbook to canvas or board. The surface of the painting is then built up with layers of paint. The subtleties of the process of layering the paint, scraping back and layering again creates the richness and depth that the memory itself has for me.
